Community Gym Bookbag Giveaway
Objective Flacco Community Gym host an annual event at Oakridge Elementary for back to school. Community members, staff, parents and local professionals are present for this event. Over 200 children and their families were in attendance. Oakridge Elementary demographics is 43% hispanic and 83% of the students qualify for free lunch, with income under $15,171 which is 130% below poverty level.
Overview Eatwell Exchange had a table at the event with visuals representing a healthy plate, sugar content in popular beverages and trivia questions for families to answer. While the event was going on administrators, staff, parents and community members were able to ask questions and be provided with healthy and affordable recipes for families. Families were given divided lunch boxes to help encourage healthy portions, snack containers and healthy snacks. Interactive trivia game was played on stage with participants. Game used crowd participation and student volunteers to help children learn how many servings of fruits and vegetables are needed per day, how much water they should have and also what foods belong to which groups. Physical activity was incorporated by having children toss bean bags to guess the correct answer.
Reaction Parents were very receptive to the information they were given as many were dealing with mealtime issues with their children. Most of the population expressed concerns in regards to meal selection price and timeliness. From the responses to the trivia game, many parents were aware of portion sizes and daily requirements for their children. Children were very knowledgable about food groups and which foods belonged together.
