Objective
Flacco Community Gym host an annual
event at Oakridge Elementary for back to
school. Community members, staff, parents
and local professionals are present for this
event. Over 200 children and their families
were in attendance. Oakridge Elementary
demographics is 43% hispanic and 83% of
the students qualify for free lunch, with
income under $15,171 which is 130% below
poverty level.

Overview
Eatwell Exchange had a table at the event
with visuals representing a healthy plate,
sugar content in popular beverages and
trivia questions for families to answer. While
the event was going on administrators, staff,
parents and community members were able
to ask questions and be provided with
healthy and affordable recipes for families.
Families were given divided lunch boxes to
help encourage healthy portions, snack
containers and healthy snacks.
Interactive trivia game was played on stage
with participants. Game used crowd
participation and student volunteers to help
children learn how many servings of fruits
and vegetables are needed per day, how
much water they should have and also what
foods belong to which groups. Physical
activity was incorporated by having children
toss bean bags to guess the correct answer.

Reaction
Parents were very receptive to the
information they were given as many were
dealing with mealtime issues with their
children. Most of the population expressed
concerns in regards to meal selection price
and timeliness. From the responses to the
trivia game, many parents were aware of
portion sizes and daily requirements for their
children. Children were very knowledgable
about food groups and which foods
belonged together.
